Ben Marcoux is a saxophone player, composer, and teacher, born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. He is the founder of SelfHelpSax.com and BMX Marketing, LLC.
While in 5th grade at James L. McGuire elementary school, he saw his first live concert—a Dixieland jazz band performed in the school gymnasium. As soon as the band started playing, Ben knew live music was something special. By the end of the first song, he had made up his mind up to become a professional musician.
Ben started playing clarinet less than a week after this life-changing concert. He switched to saxophone after listening to John Coltrane’s album “Giant Steps.”
Ben graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2015, where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Saxophone Performance. He has played music all over the United States, from Maine to New York to New Orleans.
The highlights of his career to date occurred at the Newport Jazz Festival, in 2012 and 2013. He played lead alto saxophone with the University of Rhode Island Festival Big Band, on the main stage of the festival.
In addition to an active performing schedule, Ben teaches music in a variety of settings, and has been doing so for over ten years. Through SelfHelpSax.com, he has taught private lessons VIA Skype to students on every livable continent.
Ben also works closely with the Newport Festivals Foundation. He is the bandleader for the Newport Jazz Assembly. This group has already performed live, free, jazz concerts for over 10,000 elementary school students all across Rhode Island.
